The Power of combining Data Analytics and Lean Six Sigma (Use Case)

For #transformationtuesdays let’s talk about:

  1. Lean Six Sigma and Data Analytics
  2. How you can reap the benefits of combining both together via a use case
  3. How you can learn one or the other even if you’re just a beginner

Lean Six Sigma and Data Analytics

Historically, Lean and Six Sigma were 2 different things. But since they compliment each other, it just made sense for experts to put them together.

I talk about that in detail in the article What the Heck is Lean Six Sigma.

More recently though, with Lean Six Sigma being adapted more and more across various industries, it was only a matter of time before collaboration between both Data Analytics and Lean Six Sigma practicioners happened.

In my own past experience being a Lean Six Sigma practicioner, working with a Data Scientist was a blessing, as both our skillsets just fit together like Lego.

Moreover, I learned a thing or two about advanced analytics beyond the statistics that we normally use in Lean Six Sigma.

A use case combining Data Analytics and Lean Six Sigma

Having said that, on the link below you’ll find a research document from David Fogarty, MBA, PhD, from the University of Phoenix.

Once you open it, in item #2 you’ll find the Analysis and Case study about a large financial institution and how their Data Analytics team incorporated Lean Six Sigma into what they do to achieve great results.

And I will quote from David Fogarty’s research:

“Given the case studies outlined, we have evidence that the combination of Lean Six Sigma and advanced analytics go hand in hand due to their process oriented nature and rigorous search for the truth in data.

Moreover, these paradigms combined will yield improved results over their separate application.

In particular it was noted that advanced analytics could be used in the Measure and Analyze Phase of the DMAIC improvement process.

During the measure phase a focus on advanced statistical techniques going beyond the simplistic control chart could really allow businesses to understand how a process is working.”
