Why should you learn Excel VBA?

Have you ever had a task that involved Microsoft Excel, where you have to do the same rules-based task over and over again?

For example.

You receive an inventory of items that need to be worked on by your team for the rest of the day, and your job is to filter the file to find if there are any redundant entries, as well as check if there are items that have already been worked on yesterday.

Then you apply a constant formula across all entries to provide computed figures.

And then finally you slice and dice the file based on task types, copy and paste them onto separate Excel files in order to distribute the work items to different people in your team using Microsoft Outlook.

If you’re doing something similar to this, let me ask you a question.

Doesn’t it just stress you out that you have to do that task over and over again, daily, sometimes even hourly, without thinking?

Don’t you think that’s a useless consumption of your valuable brain power?

To make matters worse, if you make a minor mistake on any portion of that task, your scorecard gets impacted for something as silly as wrong data entry. Doesn’t that feel degrading to you?

Don’t you wish you had a way of just opening a file, and at the magical click a button, it will do everything for you, including sending the emails to your colleagues?

If you think this is a problem worth solving, then Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) is what you need to learn.

That’s process improvement right there in the form of automation.

And before you get all overwhelmed that it might be so complex and that you would need to learn how to code, I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to learn how to code just to start automating simple tasks.

If you’re a beginner, it’s a simple matter of clicking “record macro” on Excel, and you can start ding the tasks that you repeatedly do, and once you stop the recording, you can “run” the macro over and over again and it will just replicate the task that you “recorded” even if you feed it with a new data set.

You only need to learn how to code if you wanna do the more complex fancy stuff.

And if you didn’t know, VBA covers the Microsoft suite of applications. So you won’t be limited to just Excel. You can integrate Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and more!
