When you live and breathe continuous process improvement, you’ll start to realize that it creeps into your life such that whatever you do, you’re trying to make it better.
You’ll find that you’re constantly looking to fix things that bug you.
You learn how to “see the waste” which are things that are being taught in the Lean Methodology under the acronym DOWNTIME:
- Defects
- Overproduction
- Waiting
- Non-utilized talent
- Transportation
- Inventory
- Motion
- Extra processing
And then you take note of any identified waste or problem you encounter.
Then once you find a solution, you document how you are going to do it better so that you won’t have to go through the same problem again.
The idea is about how you can solve a problem not once, but forever.
Moreover, it’s about making it a part of your day-to-day life. Make it a part of you so that it will be exactly how you operate day-in and day-out.
The example below from Paul Akers of Fastcap shows how you can integrate this into your life in things as mundane as the kitchen.
Paul is the author of the 2 Second Lean book which talks about how he encourages people to find 2 seconds of improvement each and every day. And it’s that sort of mindset that you’ll see in the video below.
Little improvements to common problems here and there, such as where to place the cleaning materials and condiments so it will be easily accessible, how to organize the utensils in the dishwasher, visual management and labeling, among many other small things, when accumulated, will lead to a better overall experience.
You’ll see what I’m talking about on the video below.
