It’s #thankfulthursdays and I would like to give gratitude to Carlo Jose for teaching me how to not fear role and career changes, or even on taking part in important initiatives that you can add to your portfolio.
He taught me a method on how to decide when to make a move, when the right opportunity presents itself, and I would like to pay it forward by sharing it with you.
Note that this is not for everyone, and you may have your own opinions about this, but personally I have used this method to get to where I am today as a leader in the Continuous Process Improvement field.
How it works is you need to answer 4 simple questions.
Selection Criteria
- Will you be one of the pioneers in that role?
- Will there be new challenges to solve?
- Will you be in a controlled environment, at least during the initial stages, such that it is safe to make mistakes?
- Is it important enough to the business, such that all the great leaders will be focused there to do what they can to ensure you will succeed so long as you commit to doing your part?
If the answer is YES to all of these questions, then it is an opportunity worth pursuing, and you can dive headfirst into it.
Why does it work?
First of all, by being the first to volunteer to be part of something new, by the time it grows, you will be one of the pioneers. When it’s time to choose the next generation leaders, you will be one of the first to be considered.
Second, if there are new challenges to solve, and you do solve them, not only will you learn from the experience, you will also be known as the one who makes things happen. These are achievements that you can always add to your portfolio of accomplishments.
Third, if it’s new, and it’s important enough to the business, they will want to ensure that the program as well as the people involved in it will become successful.
It means that leadership will put a lot of focus on it, and will ensure that they set the people up for success.
Moreover, they give leeway for failure in a controlled environment, which means it is safe for you to make mistakes, learn from them, and share best practices.
Lastly, it will get your name out there in front of senior leaders, and you will be able to build relationships that matter, especially when it’s time to step up and find the next generation leaders.
I hope you found value in this.
